Mass removal is surgery to remove a lump under the skin or within the body. At Genesis Surgery Center, the focus is skilled mass removal using minimally invasive techniques. All procedures are outpatient, saving you a hospital visit.
There are several reasons that you might need mass removal.
Many tissue masses aren’t harmful, but they may be embarrassing. If you don’t like the way a mass looks, there’s no reason to live with it when mass removal is a straightforward outpatient procedure.
Masses in certain areas can be uncomfortable. For instance, a mass under your arm, in your groin, or on your leg can be irritating because another body part or clothing is always pressing down. Mass removal can help your body feel like your own again.
Some masses are malignant (cancerous) or have the potential to become cancerous. One example is colon polyps, which are common and often found during colonoscopy.
About three-quarters of colon cancers start as adenomatous polyps. They’re by far the most common type of colon polyps. Although just 5% of those polyps are malignant, the risk of them becoming malignant increases over time, so surgeons remove colon polyps as soon as they find them.
Some mass removals are surgery, and others are not. For instance, colonoscopy with polyp removal isn’t surgery.
Mass removal procedures require local anesthesia. If you need a more complex surgery to remove a mass, you may need general anesthesia.
The mass removal process depends on where the mass is, its type, and the reason for the procedure. Surgeons generally make small incisions and, if necessary, drain the mass. They may remove the entire mass.
Every mass is different, so Genesis Surgery Center customizes your mass removal.
The repair after the mass removal depends on how much tissue remains. If a significant amount of tissue is removed, you may need stitches. In other cases, you might not need any.
After your procedure, you remain under observation at the surgery center for a short time. Then, a loved one can drive you home. You get detailed instructions to help you care for the site and recover as soon as possible.
