What is general surgery?

General surgery is a large group of procedures. The American College of Surgeons explains that general surgeons have a wide range of training. This includes special training in:

  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Wound healing
  • Pathology (study and diagnosis of disease)
  • Immunology
  • Neoplasia (rapid uncontrolled growth of cells, forming tumors)
  • Metabolism
  • Nutrition
  • Shock and resuscitation
  • Intensive care

A general surgeon needs all of these skills to manage the full patient journey, from diagnosis to pre-op, surgery, and post-op periods.

What procedures does general surgery include?

General surgery mainly focuses on the organs and other tissues in the torso and abdomen. Genesis Surgery Center covers many different areas within general surgery, including:

  • Hernias
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Gallbladder surgery
  • Mass removal
  • Acid reflux surgery

Alongside surgical procedures, Genesis Surgery Center offers many minimally invasive nonsurgical procedures such as colonoscopy. All surgeries are outpatient. After a short period of observation following the surgery, you can go home to recover where you’re most comfortable.

How do I prepare for general surgery?

Genesis Surgery Center provides a detailed list of preparation instructions before your surgery, which usually includes fasting and arranging for transportation. Since you recover at home, you also need to ask someone to stay with you for a full day after your surgery.

You may also need blood tests, imaging exams, or other assessment and diagnostic evaluations before your surgery.

What can I expect from general surgery?

Most general surgeries require local or general anesthesia administered by a highly trained specialist who tailors your medication based on your health, the procedure, and other considerations.

Although every general surgery is unique, Genesis Surgery Center always uses minimally invasive approaches (for example, laparoscopic surgery) whenever possible.

Minimally invasive approaches involve tiny incisions (less than half an inch wide). Some minimally invasive procedures, like transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) for chronic acid reflux, don’t require any incisions at all.

With these less-invasive approaches, your surgery will be smoother, recovery will be more comfortable, and you can get back to your regular routine sooner.
