What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive style of surgery, involving far smaller incisions than open (traditional) surgery. While the average open surgery incision is a minimum of 3 inches long (often much longer), the average laparoscopic incision size is just .39 inches (less than half an inch).

When might I need laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery mainly focuses on the torso and abdominal areas. Some common examples are:

  • Mass removal: removal of cancerous or noncancerous tumors
  • Gallbladder surgery: gallbladder removal
  • Hernia repair: hiatal hernia or abdominal wall hernia repairs
  • Acid reflux surgery: transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF)

There are also many other applications for laparoscopic techniques.

How does laparoscopic surgery work?

Doctors perform laparoscopic surgery after you receive local, regional, or general anesthesia. Incisions are in the torso or abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery usually involves three or four incisions, sometimes more or less.

One incision is for a narrow tube and ultraslim video camera. The video camera shows the surgeon a close-up view of the area.

The other incisions are for surgical tools. Similar to the first incision, thin tubes go into the incisions, and then slim surgical tools fit through the tubes.

The surgeon then views the area as they perform the procedure. Depending on the type of laparoscopic surgery, this may involve:

  • Moving tissue
  • Removing tissue (for example, your gallbladder)
  • Scraping tissue to gather cell samples
  • Repairing damaged tissue

After the procedure, the surgeon removes surgical tools and tubes and places tiny stitches (usually just one or two) to close the incisions.

What are the benefits of laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is becoming more popular than open surgery. That’s mainly because it offers a lot of advantages for patients. These are:

  • Less bleeding
  • Less tissue damage
  • Less pain
  • Faster healing
  • Faster return to work
  • Less scarring
  • Lower chance of post-surgery complications

It’s also important to know that laparoscopic surgery can keep you out of the hospital. At Genesis Surgery Center, laparoscopic surgery is an outpatient procedure. Following your surgery, you spend some time in a recovery room. After monitoring, you can go home that day.
